We are featured on the 159 number (march 2013) of Capçalera, the magazine of Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya. The reporter, Nereida Carrillo, spoke with Jaume Serra -La Vanguardia Infographics and Illustration Director- with Ricard Gràcia -El Periodico Infographics chief- and with us, we are very proud of that but we have to work really hard to be at their amazing level.

Review of our first year

It isn’t easy to pinpoint the exact date when Datan’Press was born. During the last trimester of the year 2011 we all got together several times (Saül Gordillo also came along a few times) and started the projects @Resultados20n and @DebatPSC. After this we (Arnau, David and Edu) decided to start to working together systematically in data journalism and the analysis of big data.

Bellow there’s a review of our first year:

February:
-15th. We came up with the name Data’n’Press.

March:
-20th. Finalist in the second edition of Concurso Empèn UPC (Programa Innova), which allowed us to take the Enterprising course at EADA Business School free of charge.

April:
-12th. We presented @Resultados20n in the Data Journalism Barcamp of MediaLab-Prado.

July:
-6th. We launched Twitterencatala.org that counts the number of users switching their twitter interface to Catalan.
-17th. Presentation of Data’n’Press in the workshop Una panoràmica sobre la situació del periodisme de dades al món of Media140.
-26th. Data’n’Press is a last minute guest speaker in a forum about Amphibious Reporters in I Curso de Verano UCM de Periodismo de Datos with Chiqui Esteban and Mari Luz Congosto.

September:
-7th. We launched Especial 11 de setembre de Twitterencatala.org that counts the hashtags that were most used during the diada.
-21th. We launched Especial la Mercè 2012 para El Periódico de Catalunya that shows geo-localized tweets about la Mercè on a map of Barcelona.

October:
-12th. We talk about Data Journalism in the radio show Internauta.

November:
-9th. We launched Tuitometre de Vilaweb to follow the Catalan elections electoral campaign.
-25th. We launched Mapa del Sobiranismo para Vilaweb, that shows the results of the Catalan election in every city and town.

December:
-29th. We did an assessment of the first 5 months of twitter in Catalan in Tv3 News (Catalan public Tv).

El Mapa del Sobiranisme

We develop for VilaWeb the “Sovereignty Map” of the Catalan elections that want to show the results with a different point of view. It’s also a technologic challenge, because there is 946 towns to show and a quite huge data. All project is developed with D3.

The Twitometer

We have developed a tool for VilaWeb to make the social media coverage of the elections of the Catalan Parliament. The Twitometer show what is the most retwitted twit of the day of each political party, also we give some details like how many politicians are on twitter, the number of tweets that they did or the most common words. We hope that our tool will help to understand more the campaign on the social media.

Project la Mercè 2012 for El Periódico

We explain la Mercè 2012 (Barcelona fiestas) with geolocalitzaction, mapping twits on a Barcelona map and showing photos and tweets taked during the events for El Periódico (Catalan newspaper).

It’s our first project with geolocalization, we work with a Leaflet map, generated by TileMill using maps of OpenStreetMap. Web is developed with PHP and we use Gettext for Spanish – Catalan translation.

Twitter’n’Català

Today we are a little bit nervous because we launch a new tool: Twitter’n’Català, a counter of the twitter users who adopt catalan as twitter language. The application, also, will allow to the user to change automatically the language configuration, and will show what language use the followed twitter users. #Twitterencatala it’s an old demand of catalan community lead by Albert Cuesta, a freelance writer, analyst and translator.
